Medication Training required for ALL child care providers

Changes to the Drug Control Act 54.1-3408 shall not prevent the administration of drugs by a person to a child in a child day program provided such a person

•  Has satisfactorily completed a training program approved by the Board of Nursing

• Taught by a RN, LPN, MD, OD, or licensed pharmacist.  

•   Has Written authorization from parent or guardian  

• Administer drugs only to the child identified on the prescription label as instructed as to dosage, frequency and manner  

• Administer only drugs that were dispense by a pharmacy and are maintained in original labeled container that would normally be administered by parent or guardian to a child.  

 PMAT Course Information

About the course

The PMAT course trains providers in child day programs, who do not ordinarily administer medications, but who supervise children (e.g. bus drivers), to administer an emergency injection of epinephrine using an auto-injector device (EpiPen) and/or to apply prescription topical ointment or cream (e.g., diaper ointment). The PMAT class can be completed in 2 hours. Class size is limited to 25 participants.

Who Should Attend?

Providers or staff members who do NOT ordinarily administer medication but who supervise children who may need an epipen injection in an emergency situation and/or providers or staff members who supervise children who may need the application of prescription topical ointments or creams.

Course Requirements

To attend the PMAT course a child care provider or employee of the program must be:

·         at least 18 years old

·         literate (able to read and write) in English

·         have current certification in first aid

·         have current certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)

Renewal

The training certificate for the PMAT course expires after three (3) years. There is no renewal of the PMAT certificate. The PMAT course must be attended at three year intervals.
